China has a "stunning lead" in 37 out of 44 critical and emerging technologies as Western democracies lose a global competition for research output, a security think tank said on Thursday after tracking defence, space, energy and biotechnology.

The report, published on Thursday, said the US was the leader in just the remaining seven technologies such as vaccines, quantum computing and space launch systems.

“The critical technology tracker shows that, for some technologies, all of the world’s top 10 leading research institutions are based in China and are collectively generating nine times more high-impact research papers than the second-ranked country (most often the US).”

China was likely to emerge with a monopoly in 10 fields including synthetic biology, where it produces one-third of all research, as well as electric batteries, 5G, and nano manufacturing.

Its not since ww1 with Germany & Austria-Hungary that the USA/the UK have faced a country that is a real peer on all fronts. China is why Russia is an issue for the West. By itself Russia would already have cracked once it got sanctioned as its economy would have ground to a halt without all sorts of specialized components that you either have to get from the West or China. But thats the thing China has a complete economy where you can get everything, that is separate from the West.

That is why Germany & Austria-Hungary and friends were such a competitor. Any corporations you could think of in the Anglo-Saxon world, there were German corporations doing the same thing and at the same level of technology, and the Central Powers were innovating very, very big breakthroughs in science and technology. And economically the Central Powers economy was on par with the Anglo-Saxon world, like similar amounts of manufacturing.

Even in the worst case demographic scenario, China will have a larger population and workforce than the US for decades, while their homogeneity means that, if need be, they can happily start importing foreigners at a scale the US can't really do anymore, considering that it's the US now with serious internal ethnic/racial issues slowly ripping it apart.

Ya the US strategy if China was to keep advancing to be like the East Asian nations we control(so if China was like Japan except 10 times bigger).. is it would take the whole Western alliance to counter China and China's allies. As the USA with 331 million people versus China with 1,410 million people the USA wouldn't be able to compete over time alone.

Another interesting thing is when the Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact countries were going down, it doubly forced China to go hardcore for its industrialization and going for science and technology. Because if China had remained an agrarian collectivist nation to this day, then the West would have ripped it apart.

Whereas if you go back to the 1960's and 1970's, China had the Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact countries backing them up, which together they countered the Western alliance.
