Apparently it could work IRL, but in the lore of Gears of War the gun is more dangerous to the user than the person you are killing with it. Because of the bone fragments being flung into the air (bone fragments coming from the aliens) they can get shot into your eye and kill you. Fact Fiend made a video on this a few days ago.
