Romance hardly existed between adults until companies started marketing diamond rings and shit. Romance was for teenagers ONLY, that's the way it was and that's the way everybody knew it had to be. Even ancient Greek philosophers said it was best for people to outgrow fairy-tale romance as the entered adulthood, and focus on a more "mature" type of "romance" (marriage as a business contract for the purpose of having offspring).
