Here is my suggestion:

Hyperion by Dan Simmons. Sci-fi with a cast of characters relaying their backstories as they travel on a pilgrimage through space. Pretty high concept but also with likeable and three dimensional characters. I'll be reading the sequel soon. It's quite long though.

If you want something less involved I recommend The City and the Stars by Arthur C Clark. Another high concept sci-fi adventure but a much shorter book and a one off rather than part of a series.
