This isn't directly related to race but it's because they didn't care about the future and had a utopian worldview. Look at the common mentality of the 1960s-1990s, live in the moment, have free sex, do whatever feels good. Everyone can get along, diversity is good, love everyone etc but they never had to experience the ramifications of these ideas themselves.
