Mugshot of Nathan Larson at Fresno County Jail, February 2021
Yesterday, upon the motion of the U.S. Attorney's Office, U.S. District Judge Jennifer L. Thurston signed an order dismissing the Indictment against Nathan Daniel Larson (@Leucosticte), which you can read here:
The federal grand jury indictment (see below) dated January 2021 alleges that Larson kidnapped a 12-year-old girl with the intention of sexually assaulting her, alongside other related charges. Had Larson been tried and convicted, he could have faced a maximum of three life sentences plus fifty years in prison.
Neither the motion of the Government nor Judge Thurston's Order elaborates on the reasons behind the dismissal. However, there have been informal reports that Nathan Larson died in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service late last month whilst awaiting trial. In the weeks preceding his purported death, Larson was conducting a hunger strike in an apparent political protest. He reportedly sought the abolition of age-of-consent laws as well as laws criminalizing incest and child pornography.
Given the dismissal of charges, I believe it is reasonable to presume that Nathan Larson has died. A former accountant, Larson stood as a candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in 2008 and 2018. He was unemployed and living with his parents at the time of the alleged kidnapping, when he was 40 years old. He is survived by his mother Dorothy, his sister Rebecca, and his daughter Piper.
A longer obituary is forthcoming.
