I had this same question, and what I eventually realized is that people reach for anecdotes because stories are easier to hold in the mind than numbers. A story about someone they knew who beat the odds feels more convincing than an abstract figure, even if the figure represents thousands of lives. Statistics show us the range of outcomes and the likelihood of each, but narratives make a possibility tangible and memorable.
