by far the best genre if you cant listen to it you are mentally ill i expect a lot of poeple listening to it here
here is a quick summary for the subgenres
1st wave black metal: the first bands who defined the astehtics and sounds nothing too crazy

2nd wave black metal/classic black metal: came years later pushing the extreme satanism, atmosphere, lo fi, vocals and guitars also known for the controvorsy in norway where church arson and murder appeared

melodic black metal/meloblack: focusing on insane melodies and a softer style where double guitars are almost obligitary

atmospheric black metal: heavily focusing on melancholic ambient atmosphere with black metal intensity less hostile and more nature vie focused

raw black metal: pushing the hostility and the lo fi sound to its limit with thin guitars even more shrieking vocals intentionlly shitty made
symphonic black metal: the subgenre adds a lot more synths with equipments like keyboards, choirs and pianos

depressive suicidal black metal/dsbm: very negative music with dark less hostile more self hatered deprresive impending doom

I could never get into it, just sounds like noise and 95% of it sounds the same.

War metal is also great, despite it being more death influenced. Death metal is good anyways. The only subgenre I don't really like is DSBM.

Its faggotry main character syndrome look at me yelling and screeching :soy:

Annoying

You can call me a normie but Burzum is the only Black Metal artist I've found that I liked. I tried listening to Mayhem and Darkthrone but they didn't do anything for me. Also, is "first wave Black Metal" really a thing? I think that Thrash Metal is a more accurate description of bands like Bathory and Celtic Frost, and Speed Metal/NWOBHM is a more accurate description of bands like Venom. Not denying that those bands were inspirations for the 2nd wave of Black Metal bands though.

Burzum is always a good entry but there are definitely other bands for you maybe not the raw stuff and you might have a point with 1st wave black metal venom is arguably blackend thrash but something like bathory is where thrash isn't enough. it's more of a historical term than a genre anyway

True, that's fair. Genre labels are not anything to get worked up over really, first wave Black Metal is a useful term to describe the bands who went on to be described as Black Metal by either themselves or their fans. I should give Mayhem and Darkthrone another shot, it was a bit unfair of me to say that they didn't do anything for me, they just did not do as much as Burzum did for me during the few listens I gave their material. If you don't mind me asking, which second wave Black Metal releases do you like the best? I would like to get more into that stuff. Doesn't have to be exclusively second wave Black Metal releases either if that isn't your thing. Just thought I'd ask about those since I want to find some bands similar in sound to Burzum, and I assume that other second wave bands would be the most similar. Would also be interesting to hear what some of your favourite Black Metal releases are generally, regardless of their era and popularity.

Thoughts on melodic black-death like dissection?

I must admit that I am not familiar with them. If there are any releases you recommend from them I would happy to check them out. I am very ignorant about Black Metal as a whole, I wish to learn more about the genre.
