Anime is about a japanese salaried man, Rock, who ends up working for a pirate group operating from the fictional South East Asian city of Roanapur. But the central character is the dual weilding gun slinger of the group, Revy. The plot is divided into mini arcs, each with its own antagonists and complete stories with very little overarching story progression. The character dilemmas mainly revolve around Rock trying to reconcile his morals with his new profession, experiencing harsh realities of the world.
Personal opinion
The good- The main focus is gun wielding action and this show has loads of it. It can be a hit or miss at times. The anime has one hot waifu chick after another. It doesn't shy away from fan service now and then. But most importantly it has plot themes that are seldom explored in other anime thus giving it a fresh feel. I mean how many anime have you watched that tackle themes like, SEA piracy, neo nazis, child porn, russian mafias with soviet history, south american juntas, money counterfeiting etc. Even the SEA setting itself is a refreshing shift from the usual japanese landscape. Makes the show feel grounded in reality despite the unrealistic action and usual anime bullshit.
The bad- Its an old anime so the animation, though good for its time, is kind of outdated now. The plot is paper thin and only serves to lead from one actions set piece to the next. So much so that it sometimes feels forced and contrived. There is no overarching plot, so don't expect any story heavy elements . The characters don't have much depth, only one or two seem to have more than one dimension.
Also, the dubbed version is usually recommended for this one because its good and the accents add another layer of authenticity
