I'm not going to lie, I haven't ever played past the first three generations. Crystal is my favorite, though. The rest just seem too easy to be honest, if I did play another Pokemon game, it would likely be a Fanmade ROM Hack or something.
If you like difficulty there's special hackroms for that like radical red

Emerald is literally a superior version of the same thing. Honestly the best pokemon game I ever played and it's not even close when it comes down to the battle frontier

A co-worker has recommended those. He is a pokemon conaisseur and says that those two are the absolute best.
