it's not all true. If you've got no money they're a grind, as you'll be taking the 11 hour train from Bangkok to Nong Khai in North Thailand, then crossing the Lao border by bus, staying in an utter shithole in Vientiane (which is a shithole city), and counting down the days until you get your passport back and you can get back to Thailand. And then of course you've got the 11 hour train back to Bangkok...

I was a poorcel so I did the second option. It sucked, but it was only needed until I got my work permit. Went on 3 Laos trips the entire time I was there.

Needless to say even if you do have to stomach the 11 hour sleeper train of death with no aircon it still beats living in the west!

Erm, I found a job myself. A girl I'd just started seeing helped me find my initial apartment but I'd have been fine without her. Yes you understand it correctly, although 'just a few days' is a long time in Vientiane...

You apply for the visa outside Thailand. Do yourself a favour though - get the longest term visa you can in your home country before you even board the plane. Then you might avoid a lot of the visa run bullshit.

Possibly, not sure. I generally try and stay away from other foreigners when in SEA. I've spent nearly my entire life around them, and their views, western mentalities etc...it's like a disease I don't want to be around. Only time I ever spoke to westerners was in the language centre I worked at as they were co-workers, and even that was only one day a week.
