Until you get to the the most advanced math available, it’s basically like a cake recipe.
Do this with that and some basic arithmetic.
Anyone can bake a cake with a recipe, the only problem is, in your typical academic setting you’re supposed to “bake a cake from memory”.
It doesn’t detract from your understanding that mixing ingredients and applying heat makes a cake, but without the recipe something will probably be overlooked.

It goes through periods though - sometimes I'm pretty good and then other times it's like I'm lobotomised. I think it's got alot to do with your mental state/health at the time

I used to suck at math when I did it in school. Later I had to actually use math for things like writing programs or modding video games. When I had to actually use it and figure out problems I started to get a much better grasp of it. Same thing with many other subjects I struggled with.
This is why formal education is so worthless, it only teaches mimicry of technique rather than understanding of the concepts needed to solve problems. You will learn more by tinkering with things than sitting in some dipshit's class, with very few exceptions.
