Well, some of it is because of our culture. To an extent people are biologically programmed to seek out looks as a sign of health and fertility, but that's mostly dealing with the extremes, chad or truecel. Most people fall somewhere in between those lines, and this is where it largely becomes culturally relevant. In monogamous societies people will pair bond in their own leagues.
