I intuitively think that genetics won't give you subhuman traits like say a recessed chin. It must be something environmental like mouth breathing or a incorrectly grown face.

mouth breathing has very little effect on growth, it's like 99% genetics

You know how some people are disabled? While others struggle with mental illness that's proven to be passed on due to genes? It's the same thing with this. If you lack facial features, below average height, etc... You qualify just as much as the examples I've provided.

Facial features are mostly the result of genes. Mouthbreathing and oral posture probably do have some effect on the growth of your face, especially in the extreme cases that Mew likes to point to, but it's mostly genetic.
A multivariate analysis involving thousands of closely sampled landmarks further identified extended and well-defined facial regions sharing similar patterns of variability, with heritability estimates reaching or exceeding 0.7, including the chin, nasal regions, nasolabial folds, upper lips and zygomatic bones. In addition, using a smaller set of these landmarks, we explored the heritability of more traditional distance-based facial traits. A number of facial lengths, including bizygomatic and nose width, had heritability estimates close to or greater than 0.7, values that are significantly higher than the ones previously encountered in the respective literature.
For comparison, the heritibility of height and intelligence are around 0.7-0.8. So, facial features such as the zygos, the chin, and the width of the nose are almost as heritable as height and intelligence.

Thanks for sharing the article. Yeah, it does look like it's mostly genetics.

I dont know if it is,but it sure has some effect like mouthbreathing. all about genes tbh

Bad genes plus bad environment

When I look at pictures from my father when he was in school, like class photos, everyone had good facial structure. Idk you may be right

My face got deformed by mouth breathing in childhood. So it's true but i was maybe 4/10 before mouth breathing destroyed my face. I had a great teeth, cheekbones but that wasn't enough. It's all about genetics at the end of the day.
