I would say yes, they are.
I have never met an avid sports fan that's deep and articulate. On social media, the same people that post out-of-context quotes and new age-y crap also tend to ecstatically post about their favorite team winning. They're also the types that get into full blown arguments about which player is better, his trade value, etc.
