There is a British documentary about him and he defends North Korea, saying in America he lived in constant poverty with a single mom prostitute, going from cars to motels. In North Korea he's literally a movie star (where he acts as a bad American guy in movies) and they gave him apartment and rations like food, alcohol and cigarettes, even when there was a huge famine in 90s.
