I want to learn Japanese to try to go there and bring back a waifu.

How are you teaching yourself? Classes, books?

I love the culture and I'm thinking of taking a class.

Normies are always saying to get a hobby and meet girls like that so this could be my hobby and I might be able to go out with classmates.

Not sure if I'd do a private class or through my college.

Playing untranslated visual novels and games would be a lot of fun at the very least. As well as being able to read 2chan.

I may sound negative, but you will probably waste your time, you would need to invest massive amount of time for many many years to be proficient, I thought about it myself since I LDAR all day long, but after the initial phase you will feel like you aren´t making progress and it will be very boring and you will give up.

Theres free apps that can teach you some basics aswell like anki
but yea I also bought the genki 1 book and human Japanese.
You need motivation to keep going or youre just going to give up like i did.

learned a little in high school but quit because it’s pointless because I only wanted to learn it to play visual novels and read light novels

I can speak Japanese and it isn't that great, especially if you live in an area without any Japanese people it is just useless knowledge.

I do read 2ch on occasion and it is very similar to this forum but instead they all talk about how shitty foreigners are from a Japanese perspective.

Basically 2ch is incels.is that is Japanese supremacist.
