Anyone here into model trains as a hobby?

My father collects American Flyer trains from the 50s, he just bought a few rare chrome passenger cars locally

used to have some HO scale sets as a kid

It's an old school boomer cope but kinda interesting, some people customize them and build crazy setups that fill rooms

I'm not sure if the modern ones do, they are pretty simple devices. basically just a little electric motor and a light. You can get bluetooth cameras and stuff for them

I thought these days they all had a little radio receiver and you have a controller that turns them on and off, and throttles them.

So, I thought the rails were always powered up and you control the trains with a remote.

It's possible

in the old days you would vary the voltage to the track to control the speed and even direction. Some were AC or DC depending on brand or era

I loved it as a kid and still do but ultimately gave up on the hobby as it simply requires too much house space.

No, but my grandfather certainly was very big into that stuff, and I remember when I was younger, whenever we'd go to visit, I'd always want to go see the model trains because I was fascinated by them.

this hobby is basically totally 100% male lol, bigger sausage fest than crypto. Home theater and speaker building is also a sausage fest hobby

good to hear I wasn't the only one bro, that people under the age of 60 have gotten into this shit lol. It does take up a lot of space if you build out a full track system. I like to put a loop around the Christmas tree, it's a pretty efficient use of space

Trainmaxxing is a superior hobby. Model trains are expensive as fuck tho and building all these miniature worlds takes time. That's why almost nobody picks it up.

nah but as a kid i was. I had tons of sets my dad and i built together its actually one of the few fond memories i have growing up. I loved just imagining the tiny worlds we built and watching the trains run on the tracks that we decided to build and place it was fuckin cool. He was never really into them, the models so much, but we would go down to the stations and watch the trains come in and out and he would buy me juice

would give a necro warning but this hobby is awesome lol. He just picked up a "royal blue" very rare Flyer set. Spent all day yesterday rebuilding the train car cuz it was dragging too much and using excess power
