I personally dont think graphics need to improve any more
or they enter uncanny valley
theres a point in realism where its unsettling, and not as fun.
Art style and expression is more important than graphical fidelity. Some of my favorite examples are destiny 2 (though its been a shit game for a long time), mirrors edge and its sequel, star wars battlefront 2 and battlefield 1. All a decade or older and still look fantastic, just scale the resolution with the times, and they remain on top
about why graphics fidelity doesnt necessarily mean more appealing visuals

Look at the Oblivion remake. It comes out in unreal engine 5, some of the best graphics
alas
first thing modders did was make the game greener, like the original, because art style is just better.
Chasing lifelike graphics has made the game monochromatic. Sun completely orange-washes the whole screen. Distant details are hard to make out. I'm not saying it looks bad. Im just saying it doesnt look like 20 years of progress. and im saying if they had tried to make it look like original but with those graphics it would turn out way cooler
