I’m thinking about getting into Paradox games as a new form of LDAR because I’ve got nothing to do all summer and what better way to cope than sinking hundreds of hours into living out my epic alternate history fantasies. Right now I’m basically undecided between getting EU4, Hearts of iron 4 and Crusader Kings 2 because the time period involved particularly interest me, however all three of them look extremely challenging for beginners. Which one of them should I go for?

sorry you got no replies

but I used to play Victoria 2, you should give it a try. The campaign takes a hundred years, from the end of the 1st industrial revolution to WW1.

Ive been play CK2 periodically since it went free to play on Steam. It is pretty complicated and I still dont have a full handle on it yet, but it's hella fun. The weird thing is that the focus is more on your personal relationships with your dynasty and vassals and the related rpg/trait elements, so it's a different feel than a lot of other grand strategy.

You might as well give it a shot since it's free to play. People usually recommend playing as one of the Irish dukes for beginners so you can learn the mechanics without getting shat on immediately.

If you’re new to paradox games then EU4 is your best bet imho. Very easy to master once you have a hold of the mechanics and there’s a lot of content on YouTube to learn from.

been playing since the first hearts of iron, been a big cope of mine for a very long time now.

hoi4: the besy gameplay in regards of war, but the game is just that
victoria 2: most "simulative" but also very hard to master, very funny at the end with the great wars
eu4: more balanced one, you can control almost every aspect of the game but the mana points make it boring after a while (imo)
ck2: more of a rpg really, good to make stories etc. but not for map-painting
imperator: didn't play tbh
stellaris: didn't play tbh
