Fate/stay night by the studio Deen was so shitty it damaged me badly and I can't watch anything with these characters anymore. Fate/Zero was amazing though.

He must be from a different universe than his past self then, if he's still alive after his old self went back to kill his past self. Or its a paradox.

The way the story goes, is that every 10 years something called the holy grail war occurs. 7 people that are mages are chosen to fight in this war and they are each given a heroic spirit from the past or future (heroic spirits represent anyone that could represent a hero in real life or a folktale, so King Arthur, Nero Claudius, Leonidas, even Hitler could be a possible summon).
To summon the heroic spirit you need something that relates and is critical to their existence, so if you wanted to summon hitler you would need the gun that he killed himself with.
So this kid gets chosen to participate in the war and his future self gets summoned to fight, his future self wants to kill him because the path hes about to go down to become the heroic spirit is no bueno, so he tries to kill him, the VN's are amazing (bettter than the anime imo)

So it's not an actual future self, but a representation of his future self in the form of a spirit?

it's how he ends up in the future.
his goal is to become a hero of justice and get rid of all the bad in the world. he does this by killing everyone that has done something evil no matter how small or big. he litearlly defeats isis, but his end result was just more and more violence, and they ended up executing him because he was only causing more violence.
he starts off looking like this:
then he learns magic:
then he starts killing bad ppl:
then he starts going around the world killing ppl:
then he gets executed, but accepts his death:
then in the end he dies, so once he gets summoned for the war, and he wants to kill his past self to make sure he doesn't go down the same path
he also has a special ability that let's him recreate any weapon that he can imagine, which is why he is so OP
in the anime we get to pic 2, and thats when his future self comes to kill him

yeah. after they have been executed all heroic spirits are placed in a safe haven together where they are to be summoned for the next holy grail war (if the heroic spirit wins the war along with their master they get to make a wish as well).
