The Japanese made a world of escapism based on this. Not only with the westernization of facial features, such as big eyes and small, snub noses. They adopted the narrative of the chosen one being an underdog loser and took it to extremes. This is why there are so many animes about being transported to another world (isekai), where your problems are gone and you can be a hero. So many animes about harems and where the main character is a nobody who gets harassed by sexually deviant girls. They exalt female virtue to ridiculous extremes and creates concepts like yandere and tsundere to fetishize female behavior that doesn't align with the real world. This happens from bad anime to great anime. It's not strange that they have an entire genre about underage girls either since every aspect of anime comes from sexual frustration. While their female characters are sex demons (sometimes literally) in reality, they are having a sexual crisis and the birth rate is dropping fast. Japanese men are not having sex at all and this only has been made worse by this cope.

There's escapism serviceable to the general aspects of the world and then there's escapism to sexual (and psychosexual) fantasies. The difference is when the actual work of the artist fulfills the function of a motor for this and when you have an implicit motivation besides sexual frustration. If you took something like Evangelion you can see the layers of depression as the main focus, but you still have characters like Rei and Asuka who are created as an impossible female figure. This is not unique to the Japanese but they have become experts on it.
