It was during the japanese financial boom that most of this shows were produced. The japanese consumers had enough money to actively waste on coomsuming as much slop as they wanted which meant studious could afford to take risks on niche or disturbing series like this which meant less artistic control since niche audiences had the bank to fund them. Sadly after the boom was done studious that continued running like this ended up going under since only mass produced isekai shills could be trusted to bring in the revenue from foreign and local audiences. most people thought that with the mainstreamfication of anime that we would experience a similar boom but nope. modern audiences are only interested in fantasy slop since most of them are normies. i remember the friren director complain about this
