Imagine you are playing a romantic-related visual novel to experience something virtual what you will never experience in real life. You are basically cucking yourself, but not quite since this visual novel has a special twist in it. You have been through all those routes only to get that girl but in the end this girl will end up with someone else or preferable with a dog.
Even better: You start the game and trying to take a route of some girl. Then seconds after that she looks at you with declination and you end up rejected by her.
Anime should be the same. Oregeiru is a good example. It starts good and even until the end the protagonist is watchable. The problem is, this is still utterly unrealistic. There is nobody that would take care of you, not even teachers. The protagonist is just an outcast. He should have died while he saved the dog from a crash. Then the anime should have focused on the class and their reaction to it. Nobody would have been concerned by it. Even his family would be only in sorrow for some weeks and then lifes goes on.
Also the difference between the protagonist and his sister is interesting. She is all buoyant and is living the full dopamine rush, while the protagonist is always down.
