American dataset, but AFAIK, the trends are the same as other countries so the breakdowns should probably be similar in other Western countries at least. Every single time gender differences in murder are mentioned, and this article does it as well, the part that is stressed is that women are more likely to be killed by intimate partner, yet the data clearly show that if there is one serious driver of gender differences in homicide, it's men being more likely to be killed by friends, acquaintances and strangers than women are, to a much greater level than any other differences.
