It can be a church, a mosque or a temple, but this is always the mechanism behind long-term human groupings. "Friends" never existed. Yes, if you go to the same church, or belong to the same village, you can have some "friends" but it will never be the main reason you gather with others. Even a village is in fact a religious creation; it is a group of people who have worshiped the same god(s) for generation.

2. The problem is that our modern religion is in fact individualism, i.e. the effort to turn our own person into our own god. Of course that will make it impossible to interact with others because all interaction will inevitably result in a reciprocal attempt to turn each other into a worshiper of the other, which no god-individual can accept.

3. New successful religions cannot be invented easily. The 20s century demonstrated that when we try to invent new religions and generalize them quickly to large numbers of people, catastrophe ensues. This is the lesson both of Nazism/Communism and also of Jim Jones and the like. Bluepill religion is just a slightly watered down version of what made the XXth century such a disaster.
