Not only does it have terrible effects on the body, but also according to a lot of people alcohol is the most dangerous drug you can get addicted to. The withdrawal itself can literally kill you.

Phenibut works, but it's definitely one of those YMMV sort of drugs. I had to take about 1.4g of the stuff before I really felt it. Also you do have to cycle it (I just did it once a week) since you build up a tolerance to it very quickly
