Advice on finding older games to play | never trust the general consensus

Some advice for anyone who enjoys playing older games. Never trust the general consensus or any "game journalist" opinion. There's a lot of great older games that are unfairly dismissed because either not many people played them or they're a victim of shitty YouTubers and their retarded audiences.


After reading multiple "top ten best games on {insert system}" lists as well as watching similar videos I can assure you that the majority of the people who make these lists don't even play the games on them. They just look up top rated games on metacritic or what to play and copy the Wikipedia description.

Also be aware that like today people back then and "game journalists" tended to have a bias against challenging games. You'll notice a lot of supposedly bad games are simply games that offered more challenge and depth.

Hm. I guess it depends what genres you like. I typically go for action games. I'll throw out some classics that I love, in something close to chronological order!

Berzerk, After Burner 2, Sonic & Knuckles, Dynamite Headdy, Earthworm Jim, Donkey Kong Country 2, NiGHTS into Dreams, Wipeout 2097, Perfect Dark, Star Fox 64, Half-Life, Quake 2, Shenmue, Sonic Adventure 2, Fear 2, Killzone 2.

google engine offers alot, but it is not everything.

I am very self-aware of what i enjoy and don't enjoy, i also i believe i have sufficient experience to judge things without the need of reviews or opinions.
Naturally not many are like this and most are not willing to waste time on research so they choose the fastest/convenient way possible to find something "good" to play which is reviews by popular reviewers/sites.
Those reviewers are well aware of their readers/watchers lack of knowledge and experience and they take advantage of it, so instead of making an informative review they make an advertisement.
Always keep in mind that there is no such thing as an unbiased opinion/review, everyone has their own taste and beliefs and those always (even subconsciously) affect their judgement.

To find games that i will (possibly) enjoy, i look at the following:

Date - The closer a game is launched to our current date the lower the chances are that will like it and i have to research it cautiously.

Publisher/Dev - Some Devs were good in the past but are horrible today, this is why Date is important, it's fairly easy to tell that i won't enjoy something if it's made by certain Devs.

Char designs & Artstyle - If it suits my tastes it gets my attention.

Script & Themes - Again if it's fairly new it's mostly likely going to suck and it will be visible even on the surface (Chars&Art), otherwise research including spoilers may be necessary, or make it a gamble and hope that the Script would be as good as its Char&Art (rare).

Gameplay - At least 5 minutes of footage to get a taste.
