A pharmaceutical scientist formulates a new pill which has an unusual effect. "Those who take it," she says, "will experience a large amount of emotional pain, an infinite quantity, in fact, for 24 hours. The pain should occur in anyone and it should kill you . Furthermore, iI won't matter if you swallow it normally, snort its powder, or inject it, it should work about the same, nor will it matter if you're unconscious , sedated, or given any analgesics or psychiatric medications . "
Some hundred or so people take the pill, not believing the scientist's assertion, and indeed, these people collapse, screaming, virtually immobile except to thrash about, and virtually all die within about an hour.
However, one older man, about a week later, claims he should be able to tolerate its effects. He's then brought onto national television to take it live, despite protests from producers about the possibility of having die so horrendously live on air. He takes the pill normally, with a glass of water, and seems completely fine. He even has a bed on stage for when it's time for his daily nap and bedtime, so they can monitor him for the full 24 hours. He's medically examined and found to be about normal for someone his age, without any serious psychiatric conditions, nor does he seem to have any antidote. Essentially, his circumstances taking the pill were the same as everyone else's.
Everyone is astounded. "How is it you were able to take the pill?" they ask.
"It's for one thing," he says
What was the man's secret?
I'll post the answer this Sunday.
