I am painfully self-conscious when interacting with people because whenever I let my guard down and would "be myself" I would end up getting seriously hurt by their rejection and slights.

Same here. If I decide to be low inhib and not be autistic, I'll literally be beaten up/in jail/killed/ostracisized by society within a few hours. I'm weird and I easily offend people, so I have to constantly control it.

Authenticity is the less pathological way of being, in the long run, it pays off trust me.

This. People (men) aren't as hostile as you make them out to be. I've always been extremely open about myself, even as a subhuman, and it made me some good friends along the way.
On the other hand- if you interact with women, the mistake is all yours.
