According to the most recent data available, 27.9% of South Korean newborns had birth defects in 2023; the figure for 2024 is an estimate.
Granted, not all of these birth defects are severe enough to require medical treatment, but these figures are still alarming.
However, this comes as no surprise as the mean age of women at birth of first child in South Korea is 33.6 years, among the highest, if not the highest globally.

Furthermore, South Korea has the highest abortion rate among OECD countries, and abortion can result in complications that impede (healthy) pregnancies.
