For reference, the legend reads from left to right: Number of live births (nominal), number of deformed newborns, number of live births (real), proportion of deformed newborns in all live births, total fertility rate (nominal), total fertility rate (real). I crossed out the metrics that are not officially accepted; as you can guess from the chart, "real" means that deformed newborns are not counted.

According to the most recent data available, 27.9% of South Korean newborns had birth defects in 2023; the figure for 2024 is an estimate.

Granted, not all of these birth defects are severe enough to require medical treatment, but these figures are still alarming.

However, this comes as no surprise as the mean age of women at birth of first child in South Korea is 33.6 years, among the highest, if not the highest globally.

Furthermore, South Korea has the highest abortion rate among OECD countries, and abortion can result in complications that impede (healthy) pregnancies.

How many are jeets borning their babies there?

i wonder if north korea has this issue

Is there any definition of 'birth defect'? I can't really navigate that site...

I assume almost all cases of down syndrome and other defects detectable in the womb are aborted, while autism and such can't be diagnosed at birth

That doesn't leave much room for any severe defects

The mean child bearing age in 2009 was already 31, so there hasn't been that much of a jump there, or in any of the other relevant factors.

Maybe it could be the result of broader criteria and more frequent screening, although the linear growth would suggest otherwise.

That's a fair point. Although the risk of congenital anomalies exponentially increases with childbearing age, and 2.6 years may be a significant difference, the growth shown in the first chart appears excessive.

:yes:I should check it out.

Indians are a negligible minority in South Korea.
The Government of India's Ministry of External Affairs estimates the Overseas Indian population to be only 13,585 in South Korea.
And as far as I know, in South Korea, foreign-born mothers tend to give birth to healthier children.
