That “free will is an illusion” is an area of thought that many philosophers have pondered on. Sam Harris wrote some good stuff on this very subject.

Everything in your life is dictated by either your genes or external events outwith your control (other people’s behaviour and actions, natural events, sheer luck). The ancient Greeks based their entire religion and much of their literature on this idea (the gods controlled everything, you are just a pawn on a chessboard). The Wire is a modern adaptation of this idea.
