Tbh I don't really understand the purpose behind decades long sentences, much less life sentences. What do they accomplish? Either attempt to rehabilitate people, or if that's determined to be impossible, then just kill them as quickly as possible. Tbh, American prison sentences are unusually long compared to their that of their Western European peers -- but since the U.S. system has a much higher recidivism rate, I'd say there's something wrong with it.

Breivik probably isn't getting out anytime soon, by the way. Norwegian criminal law doesn't allow for "life imprisonment"; they have what is known as "preventive detention". After 21 years, a court can extend his sentence by 5 years, and do so indefinitely, as long as they think he remains a danger to society.
