>check if the residents above you paid the rent
>do cleaning/cooking/gardening until 8 PM

If everyone collectively worked less there would be enough jobs to go around. Tragedy of the commons that nobody wants to talk about.

the problem is most of those jobs are low pay and low status, and the people working them need more than one to survive.
 
I would argue that the same people who raise barrier to job entry (the boomers in OP) are also responsible for driving up general cost of living as a side effect.
