They were promised an afterlife outside of earthly pleasures, so if you're a religiouscel, you're probably a volcel.

If you read a lot of history and old books, you'll discover soon enough that most monks and priests didn't believe strongly in an afterlife. They were the first to engage in debates about the existence of God etc. At some points there was no practical difference between the academic community and the religious community, so many intellectuals became celibate clerics out of self-interest rather than belief.

I definitely think acceptance is a key part of the journey: bitterness doesn't do us any good really, and I think your point about putting it into some worthwhile spiritual or intellectual goal is a good one (if I've interpreted it correctly).
