I grew up in an alcoholic household, so I learned to curb my drinking real quick. Don't want to end up like my parents.
I'd say learn limits. Restricting yourself completely will just lead to you crashing and burning and going straight back, I've tried. You just end up driving yourself nuts. I normally just get a big beer and take sips throughout the night, something nice and strong that's hard to chug down. My hard limit on drinks is two.
I'd say find something you like and that you can just casually drink when you do decide to drink, and drink for the flavor rather to get shitfaced.
If you're totally keen on stopping completely, record yourself shitfaced. Seeing people while they're drunk/under the influence of any drug is a good way to scare yourself straight.
