The prospect of nuclear Armageddon really focused a few people's minds onto creating amazing tech within the space of a few years.

There's a cool YouTube channel I watch called "not a Pound for air to ground" which is all about geeking out about cold war combat aircraft and weapons, he goes into the history of this stuff in a bit of detail.
