Young Americans (20-24 years old) now plan to have fewer than two children. Moreover, women are now generally deciding how many children to have – for the first time, American women want fewer children than their male peers at this age. More couples are not having children than are exceeding their goal. This makes American demographers think that the birth rate in the United States may fall below 1.3 (or even below 1.2) over the next 20 years (when the 20-24-year-olds being surveyed today will have reached their childbearing years).
