Believe me, I'm not one of those "i don't care what other people think" copers. I fully realize that your reputation is important and that what others think of you has direct implications for your quality of life (employment, dating life, social life, etc.).

But I never understood why people cared about being "remembered" after they're dead. No matter how (or if) you are remembered, you won't be around to benefit (or suffer) from it.

Suppose you were psychic and you knew for fact that after you die, people would discover your writings and you would be hailed as one of the greatest thinkers of the 21st century, but the catch is that you are ugly, your life is shit and it always will be despite your efforts. Nobody will give a fuck about you while you're alive and you will die unloved and in poverty. Would it make you feel better how you'll be remembered after death in this scenario?

It would be like getting 100 million dollars put into your bank account after you die, and you have no living family members to inherit it. Who cares?

Another good analogy would be a posthumous pardon, it's "symbolic" and makes some people who are currently alive feel all warm and fuzzy, but it's completely useless to the deceased recipient.

TL;DR: What matters in life is the present and the future within the scope of your lifetime. Besides, the universe is ultimately going to die from heat death anyways.
