not just "your first impression" but the entire internal image of you, it doesn't matter how many noble deeds you do, you will always be treated based on the quality of your face. Ugly face used to signalise inability to be useful for the tribe, therefore people like this usually just died off and were ostracized by the members of the tribe. Now due to technology ugly people (and I mean truly ugly people that have various health issues and developmental problems) can survive but the old habits of ostracizing them are still here.

Knajjd is an extreme case. He has a ridiculously pretty face and a nice personality, but he's 5'2'', so it's over. He would be fine if he was 5'6'', a relatively short height that would be fatal to a man with lesser facial aesthetics.
