Why were Portugal and Spain neutral during World War 2?

cuz poor, just got out of bloody war, and no real benefit. if joined axis, get raped by britiish using gibraltar. if join allies get raped by germans flooding from france kek

Spain exited a 3 year civil war right before WW2 began, their only dispute is about Gibraltar but they still didn't want to piss off the Brits. Portugal only borders Spain, wtf are they supposed to do

No one mentioned that but ..

Environment.

Portugue is blockaded by Spain on land routes.

Which means, shipping material from and to the country, will be much more difficult.

It's country position is also unfortunate because for allied navies to visit this region, they must get past axis bases.

The Italian and Japanese, with their functional navies, struggled to ship tanks that aren't up armored tankettes

In additionally, they are both mountainous countries, which means that these armies probably developed light infantry doctrine/focus on fast moving infantry

This is fine against shitholes like Ethiopia, but a total mismatch in the flat land of Western Soviet Union, where flat, warfare between heavy tanks took place.

How many battles were fought on mountainous regions in WW2? I can name a few...Italy border, Austria....but majority of battles were in flat grounds.

Thanks

Technically they were but Spain definitely leaned to the Axis and gave them free use of their ports in return for helping Franco win the civil war.

Portugal leaned towards the Allies and gave Britain the right to use the Azores because of long standing ties going back centuries.

Based.

Fucking beaners, the Spanish raped Mexico and Peru for gold, and the stupid beaners to this day continue to get raped.
Spain is now a far worse leftist shithole pre-Franco time. It's overrun with niggers, gypsies, moors, etc. The sacrifices of the Reconquista and the Blue Division are wasted. So much blood was shed for nothing

Spain was poor, its economy was destroyed by the civil war, and there was still some division in society. The USSR took the gold reserve for storage. The Spanish army was in poor condition and could hardly have been useful. Portugal had an ancient alliance with England since the 14th century. England has been Portugal's main trading partner throughout history. Britain even bought manganese from Portugal during World War II, and this was the backbone of Portugal's economy during World War II.
And yes, Spain sent a volunteer division to the eastern front, also known as the Blue division. Franco wanted to symbolically repay the debt owed to the Germans for their help in the civil war.
