Because America has its filthy claws spread all over the world like cancer.
India has too many poor people and societal issues, they might become a nation with a lot of wealthy people, but not a world power. India is too chaotic as a country, there is practically no organization or willingness to do anything about their poor slum dwellers. In the time that China has ascended, India has barely addressed it's lack of sewage infrastructure.
India was never a superpwer in it's history. Always subjugated by others more powerful.
India never existed as a nation-state before the British, before them it was the Mughals/other kingdoms/empires that ruled over the land. Not really much different than the rest of the world, in that someone - whether foreign or local - has always ruled the land. Nation-states are a relatively modern invention.
