Feudalism is a caste, in India you cannot move from one caste to another, you can only be born into it. In Britain, for merit, the king can make a commoner a knight or a baronet.

the caste system is generally only followed that seriously in some villages and other isolated places, most institutions in cities generally don't have a strict caste system

the caste system was an elaborate system which was a part of the broader society, and which implied that people could have a sense of vocation and be prepared for certain professions from childhood on. that's not as functional by now
