Serious Why is being old viewed as becoming irrelevant in america?

Once you get past a certain age people treat you like you are no longer as relevant anymore it seems and I feel America has an obsession with youth. I guess it's the same with anything else, most people like new things and throw away the old stuff. I'm no different, but it does suck how your automatically lowered in value once your prime years are gone.

It doesn't help that you were already deemed a loser even as a young kid anyways.... is it due to the capitalistic nature aswell as biological? The weak human body does break down over time. It just sucks not having that youthful pride anymore once your well into adulthood, I certainly feel less relevant now then before.

It used to be different. I watched Falling Down yesterday and the "badass" was a bald guy in his 60s.
