My pet evo psych theory on this is that females have an internal conflict between the desire for sex and procreation butting against the fear and anxiety of pregnancy because throughout 99.9% of history lots of women died during childbirth and they were even more vulnerable than normal during pregnancy and the first couple years with an infant.
