The average person seriously believes happiness is the ultimate life goal. The very nature of our nervous system prevents us from being happy all the time. Happiness is a brief moment of euphoria, not a permanent condition.
Unless they mean long-term satisfaction, which is not true for 99% of people. Their concept of happiness is in fact the pursuit of instant gratification; dopamine.
Rich people often get bored and study ways to spend their money. They are not miserable but are not fulfilled. Their main problem is psychological stress. What makes the average person think it would be any different in their case?
The ultimate life goal should be to perfect oneself and become a force to contend with. To be prepared when storms come along. Society flees from conflict because it is weak and effeminate. But I guess most people would rather drink themselves to death and party.
