Reality is horrible and seeing things as they are is an innately painful act. Imagine being a non-believer amongst the Aztecs and watching your fellow citizens sacrifice children to gods you know aren't real. Seeing things just a bit clearer than your fellow man has never been enjoyable if you aren't able to actively exploit this additional knowledge for your own benefit in some way. Otherwise you simply are a helpless witness to the unfairness and cruelty of the world.

I think having others to share these things, preferable real humans you can touch and talk to in person is good, especially if they aren't just outsiders looking in but instead people like you who can personally relate.
