What’s the worst that can happen to a woman if a man kisses her without her consent? Is she going to be traumatized? Is she going to spend the rest of her life recounting that harrowing peck on the cheek and getting distressed over it to the point where all her drive to live a meaningful life has been dismantled by that one unanticipated event?
If a woman kisses me without asking, even the most hideous, revolting woman there was on the planet, I wouldn’t mind. On the contrary, I would be flattered. When someone kisses you, they do it express their love towards you. Their desire to connect with you on a deeper, emotional level. Every kiss to me is a gift to lighten up my mood and make me feel better. Why should I gatekeep who gets to kiss me or not? If someone gives me a gift on my birthday that I don’t like, am I going to insult all the effort and love someone put into giving me that gift by chastising them for not asking for my opinion first?
To a woman, this isn’t the case. A woman thinks of herself as a priceless luxury that not even the most accomplished and wealthy men deserve to access without her permission. The woman thinks of herself as a queen who is the sole arbitrator of deciding whether a man is bestowed the special privilege of worshipping her or not. To want to surprise her with a kiss is a flagrant violation of this supremacy she enforces on the rest of society. Thus, the woman contrived the idea “consent” and made it a women’s rights issue.
This is the fundamental difference between how a man and women view romance. To a man it’s a gift, and to a woman, it’s a privilege another person is lucky to experience with her. That’s why one demands consent and the other does not.
