I remember when I was a child, in the pre-internet era, and when it began to boom (late 1990's), porn was strictly controlled, in many countries it was forbidden. There was almost no street violence, street would be empty at night, very little police to be seen. Police used to be more gentle and well-behaved, helped the people when asked almost for anything. They were nowhere super-armed like they are today, in fact, in many countries, the police patrolled without a gun nor bullet proof vest, because it didn't need to. People behaved with restraint, self-control, were nicer, and also self-censorship was quite common in the media. Everyone knew his place in society, had a stable, often lifelong-guaranteed job. First time I came to the UK, I was surprised to see huge panels with "anti-social behaviour warnings", I was quite shocked, because I always thought these things were ingrained into people, in their education, why the hell they need to remind them that? See, before the 1990's you didn't need to make "hate speech laws" or "anti-social laws" because it wasn't needed, people knew how to behave. My parents grew up in this environment, and they still believe it's like that.
