Why didn't western countries accept staunch anti immigration stances?

Given that England, America or France in the 1960s to 1990s were probably WAYY more racist and extreme than they are now, why was there such militant opposition towards the political right faction? Why were people like Enoch Powell or Oswald Mosley so frowned upon when most brits were pretty racist and against immigration anyway. Given the current state of somewhere like the UK now, I wonder if the old people who were against them regret their decision.
